As fun as vacations are, it’s not uncommon for people to come home only to discover that they’ve gained a considerable amount of weight. While you’re ultimately responsible for your own fitness, it can be difficult to get into the right healthy mindset while trying to enjoy a trip. With that in mind, here are a few simple tips that anyone can employ to ensure they stay in shape while having fun.
Turn Your Trip into a Hiking Trip
While there are certainly some places that are better geared towards traveling on foot, virtually any place can be turned into a hiking trip if you’re creative enough. Even if you’re vacationing in a city, try to take in as much scenery as you can on foot. It might be as exciting as walking through a jungle, but your body will appreciate it nonetheless. And, for those on a budget, walking can be a great way of saving money in otherwise expensive areas. If you’re not spending money on a taxi, you can put that money to better use throughout the remainder of your trip.
Do Your Research
If you know you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time, then you might want to do a little research ahead of your trip. Does the hotel you’re staying at have a gym? Are there any locations in the immediate area that you can go to if you need a quick break from the rest of your vacationing activities? Even if you can’t find a local gym that has day passes, you can still keep an eye out for other activities. Whether it’s a local beach or a swimming pool, what’s important is that you’re staying active at the same time as you’re enjoying your trip. In fact, there are more opportunities to stay in shape than you may have realized. Airport gyms are popping up all around the country, with companies like Roam Fitness opening one as recently as November 22nd in BWI airport. If you’re someone who frequently flies, try to schedule your flights so that you can take advantage of airports that are known to have gyms in them.
Follow the Locals
It might be tempting to go to expensive restaurants while you’re on vacation, but sometimes the cheaper option, and healthier one as well, is to simply follow the locals. If there’s a popular place in your area that’s known for selling great tasting food for affordable prices, then it’s also likelier that it’ll be more natural than the franchised spots you’d otherwise find. When food is both cheap and high in quality, it typically means that it’s locally grown or raised, which also means it has less preservatives and other non-organic qualities. If you’re trying to stay in shape, eating locally is a solid habit to get into.
Don’t Treat Your Trip As An Excuse
It’s easy to get into an unhealthy mindset while on vacation. At first, you rationalize it as a momentary lapse in judgment, or maybe you bargain with yourself and say you’ll work it off back home. This is a bad habit to get into though, as it can easily spiral into something out of control. The more willing you are to make bargains and betray your diet or workout routine, the easier it’ll be to forget about it entirely when you get back home. If you want to stay in shape, or you’ve just started a workout routine recently, then you should try as hard as you can to stick to that habit, regardless of where you are in the world. Even if it means doing a few pushups in your hotel room, the most important thing is that you remain consistent in your habits so that you can ensure they’re maintained no matter where you are.
Of course, none of these tips mean much if you haven’t already made a commitment to get yourself in shape. If you’re someone that has struggled in the past with weight loss, or simply wants to get a little more muscle than you currently have, then there’s no better time to start working out like the present. With the new year coming, it’s the perfect opportunity for those that have been on the fence to make a resolution to get healthier and stay that way. If you create a plan and stick with it, you can even reward yourself with a trip. Just remember these tips when you finally decide where you want to go.
