A Few Great Things to Consider Doing on a Vacation to East Africa

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

East Africa offers experiences that can be found in no other place in the world. For this reason, you need to think about at least one trip to this region of the world and do some of the things mentioned below. Africa is a place where you can experience nature in its purest form. Many of the animals here cannot be found anywhere else in the world except in zoos. Here, they are in their natural environment. Much of the plant life and natural formations have a character to them that is uniquely African. Think about the following.

A safari through the plains of the Serengeti National Park
This wildlife park is a place where a wide range of animals are living in their natural environment protected from the encroachment of man. You can see these animals as they have lived for thousands of years. Among the most recognizable animals are lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras  and wildebeests. This latter animal is the most numerous and survives from one generation to the next because of its numbers, and it is also best known for the migration through the Serengeti. When the rains stop and the dryness sets in, grazing animals, such as the wildebeest, begin to migrate north. In the Serengeti, the best time to see this migration is from July through October. Although you can see many of these animals in diverse places in Africa, the annual migration is spectacular. You will be able to see these animals up close in a 4x4 vehicle with the benefit of a tour guide. One of the most common reactions people have to this African Safari Trek is that it is breathtaking.

A safari to visit the mountain gorillas

In the mountain range that is the border line between the countries of Uganda and Rwanda, there exists a species of gorilla that is commonly called the mountain gorilla. These animals are far removed from the habitats of man, but they are few in number. Only a few hundred are left in existence. However, it is possible to see them up close. From your hotel, you are taken to a base camp. It is here that your guide will teach you everything you need to know about how to act when around the gorillas. There are many things you will need to be taught. When you are ready, your guide will take a small group of people (less than 10), and lead you up into the mountains. It can easily be a couple of hours or more of hiking to get to the gorillas, but once you are there, you will be able to get very close to them, only a few feet away. The time you are allowed to be with the gorillas is limited to a few minutes, but it is an experience that you will remember for the rest of our life.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
The tallest mountain on the continent of Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro is also one of the most recognizable in the world. It is a great place to visit in east Africa, and can also be a fantastic experience. You don't have to be a mountain climber to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. There is, however, a lot of walking involved, and you will be camping for several days in your journey. In addition, you won't be going all the way to the top. You can if you want to, but the biggest issue is the altitude. It takes several days to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, and you must get acclimated to the ascent in altitude. If you attempt to go all the way to the top, you will be at approximately 19,000 feet above sea level, most people have trouble adapting to the thin air. However, you don't have to go to the top to have a spectacular experience.

Most of the things listed here are spectacular experiences and usually requires some sort of tour guide and special transportation, but there are companies that offer packages that include everything you will need for your trip. You will be provided with a hotel, meals that are eaten away from the hotel, a tour guide and all of the necessary transportation. Although these trips are often an experience of a lifetime, they include many elements that must be coordinated, so it is best to buy a packaged deal and get everything you will need.
